MBE For Leeds Alumna

Dr Eileen Burns (Medicine 1981), has been awarded an MBE for her services to medicine. Eileen, a consultant physician at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, was recognised for a number of services, most recently as the President of the British Geriatrics Society.

“I came to Leeds having grown up in a small town in the north-east, and I had no previous medical connections,” Eileen tells us. “But by offering me a place and providing a fostering environment, the University nurtured my development into a professional, equipped to take on the role of junior doctor.”

Eileen went on to work as a geriatrician at Leeds General Infirmary and later St James’ Hospital, eventually becoming Clinical Director for Elderly Services and leading on the integration of health and social care. She has advised on government papers, and continues to advise on adult social care. She shares her expertise widely by speaking at conferences, publishing on the subject of care for older people, and acting as a mentor to many newer students.

“It’s been a pleasure to teach Leeds medical students and watch them grow and mature,” Eileen adds. “The number one thing I advise them is to keep going. You can’t expect everyone else to see the world the way you do, so be prepared to listen to advice, reflect on it, and perhaps change your strategy accordingly. But never give up!”

There is no doubting that this approach has served Eileen extremely well to date.
