Alumni Step Challenge

Date: 18 - 24 October 2021

Registration has now closed

Are you a regular walker or runner? Do you enjoy an evening stroll or an early morning run? Or are you just keen to get out and get active? Then join our Alumni Step Challenge, connect with Leeds graduates from around the world and have fun! Everyone can join in the Step Challenge, you don’t need to be super fit to take part!

The idea is simple

Sign up to be part of the Challenge by 23.59 (BST) on 11 October 2021
Download the Signal app so that you are ready to take part in the Challenge. A few days before the Challenge starts, you will be added to the Step Challenge chat on Signal and put into a team where you will decide on your team name. Please be aware that when you are added to the Signal chat group, other participants will be able to see your name and mobile number. Please also note that the Signal app is currently unavailable in China
• The Challenge is from 00.00 Monday 18 October to 23.59 Sunday 24 October 2021 (your local time)
Do as many steps as you can each day, log your step count on the online Step Challenge form and encourage your team mates to do the same. (See information below about how you can track your steps)
Share your photos on the Step Challenge chat on Signal to see if you can win a Stepping Snap Bonus for your team (see Stepping Snap Bonuses below)
Winners will be announced on Wednesday 27 October 2021

Apps to measure your steps

Most smartphones have an in-built fitness / health app that will measure your steps when your device is on you. For example, Health on iOS and Google Fit on Android.

Here are some further suggestions on apps that track step count:

• Pacer - activity tracker, step counter and more. Available on iOS and Android
• Fitbit - you don’t actually need a Fitbit tracker in order to use the Fitbit app. This app can record your steps. Available on iOS and Android
• GoogleFit - in built on Android phones but also available on iOS
• MapMyWalk - similar to its running counterpart, MapMyWalk tracks your walk and displays your route on a map. It records various stats including step count and distance. Available on iOS and Android
• StepsApp - any wheelchair users can use this app if you have an Apple watch. Available on iOS and Android

Running apps

• Strava
• MapMyRun
• Runkeeper

If you don’t have the tech to support any of the above apps, check out the affordable pedometers available to purchase from online sites such as Amazon.

Photo bonuses

Simply take photos when you are out stepping and add them to the main Step Challenge chat on Signal. There are 3 photo bonus categories:

1. Animals - farm animals, wild creatures or furry friends!
2. Outdoor art - urban art or art in nature - release your creativity!
3. Water - streams, canals, rivers, the sea, fountains, puddles, rain - they all count!

The top 5 photos in each category will be shortlisted by the Alumni and Development Team judges and the winners will be voted on by all Step Challenge participants.

We’d love you to be as creative as you like. You don’t have to be in the photos, unless you want to be.

Stepping Snap Bonuses

• 3,000 steps awarded to the winner of the best photo in each photo category
• 2,000 steps awarded for second place in each photo category
• 1,000 steps awarded for third place in each photo category

If you have any questions, please send us an email. We’d love to hear from you!
